Getting started with shelf.

shelf. shows shoppers what’s in stock at nearby stores in real time. This guide covers connecting your point-of-sale system, what happens afterward, and how to manage the connection.

Connecting your POS

  1. Go to the setup page and pick your point-of-sale system from the list.
  2. Agree to the terms, then click Authorize & connect.
  3. You’re sent to your POS’s own login screen. Log in there and approve the access it asks for.
  4. You’re brought back to shelf. automatically once you approve.
  5. If this is your first time connecting, check your email — you’ll get a link to set a password and confirm your store’s name and address. If you already have a shelf. account, you’re taken straight to your dashboard.

Shopify is the one exception worth flagging: after step 2 you’ll see a short explainer screen first (a Shopify requirement), then continue on to Shopify’s own install screen from there — same result, just one extra screen in between.

If your POS doesn’t support one-click access, or you’re adding a POS to a shelf. account you already have rather than starting a new one, you’ll paste a secure, read-only access token generated from your POS’s own settings instead of being redirected — the exact steps for that are shown on screen when it applies.

What happens after you connect

shelf. reads your store name, physical locations, product catalog, and current stock levels, then keeps syncing automatically — new products, price changes, and stock updates show up without any manual action on your part. Most systems sync every physical location automatically, each with its own real-time stock (the one exception is PayPal Zettle, which supports a single location).

What we access — and what we don’t

The permissions shelf. requests are read-only, and limited to: your store’s name and locations, product names and images, product categories, and current inventory counts. That’s all we can see — the requested scopes make it technically impossible for shelf. to access your cost of goods, margins, transaction history, or customer data. See our Privacy Policy for the full details.

Managing your connection

From your shelf. dashboard’s Settings tab you can trigger a manual sync at any time, hide a specific location from shoppers, or disconnect your POS entirely. Disconnecting stops your store from being shown to shoppers but keeps your shelf. account and historical data intact.

To add a team member, invite them from the dashboard’s Team tab — they get their own login to your store’s dashboard, scoped to whatever role you give them.

Uninstalling

You can disconnect at any time from your shelf. dashboard’s Settings tab — that’s the reliable way to make sure you’re fully disconnected. Some POS systems also disconnect shelf. automatically when you remove the app on their side. Either way, your inventory stops syncing and your locations stop appearing to shoppers immediately — your shelf. account itself is never deleted, so reconnecting later picks up right where you left off.

Frequently asked

I have multiple store locations — will they all show up?

For most POS systems, yes — every physical location syncs with its own real-time stock. The one exception is PayPal Zettle, which currently supports a single location per account.

Can I connect more than one store to the same account?

Each store you connect gets its own shelf. account, tied to whichever email you set up with.

How fast does inventory update?

Product and stock changes sync automatically as they happen in your POS, on top of a regular background sync as a backstop.
